Immat\u00e9rielle, virtuelle, elle doit, pour s&rsquo;ext\u00e9rioriser, pour exprimer son potentiel, trouver et emprunter un m\u00e9dium p\u00e9riph\u00e9rique.<br \/>\nD\u00e8s lors, deux grandes directions s&rsquo;offrent aux artistes : ou bien ils travaillent \u00e0 l&rsquo;hybridation de techniques num\u00e9riques et de techniques classiques; ou bien ils mettent en exergue cette m\u00e9diation en identifiant l&rsquo;\u0153uvre \u00e0 leur attitude, ou \u00e0 celle du spectateur. On aura d&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9 des peintures, sculptures, estampes, photographies, films ou vid\u00e9os, pour lesquels le calcul informatique intervient de fa\u00e7on puissante ou l\u00e9g\u00e8re, \u00e0 une \u00e9tape ou l&rsquo;autre de la conception et de la production, mais pour laisser place en fin de compte \u00e0 des mat\u00e9riaux tels que l&rsquo;encre ou le papier, la pellicule ou l&rsquo;\u00e9cran cathodique.<br \/>\nDe l&rsquo;autre, le processus restera ouvert, avec l&rsquo;intervention constante de l&rsquo;ordinateur et de l&rsquo;image sous sa forme de matrice num\u00e9rique : simulation et manipulation interactives, dialogue avec la machine, transmission en r\u00e9seaux.<br \/>\nIl y a bien s\u00fbr tous les interm\u00e9diaires : des \u0153uvres enregistr\u00e9es qui s&rsquo;attachent \u00e0 r\u00e9v\u00e9ler les subtilit\u00e9s de leur g\u00e9n\u00e9ration num\u00e9rique, des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations permanentes d&rsquo;images par l&rsquo;ordinateur qui s&rsquo;expose alors comme un tableau ou une sculpture.<br \/>\nCe partage a pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 aux choix, apr\u00e8s un large appel international, de la commission artistique de PIXIM 88 : il fallait \u00ab\u00a0installer\u00a0\u00bb, dans une sc\u00e9nographie coh\u00e9rente mais non unificatrice, un domaine artistique par nature disparate et rayonnant en directions multiples et confuses. Son esth\u00e9tique est souvent cach\u00e9e ou d\u00e9guis\u00e9e &#8211; et probablement pour cela inqui\u00e9tante, m\u00e9sestim\u00e9e ou rejet\u00e9e.
