m\u00e9moire, parce que cette ville est une m\u00e9moire d\u2019images enferm\u00e9es les unes dans les autres, alors m\u00eame qu\u2019elle est en plein bouleversement. P\u00e9kin, pour m\u00e9moire, pour ne pas oublier bien s\u00fbr, pour en noter quelques simples traces. Pour m\u00e9moire, c\u2019est aussi : peut-\u00eatre est-il bon que vous voyez un peu cela (nos archives, qui auraient pu rester priv\u00e9es), \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de ce que vous-m\u00eames vivrez, ou avez d\u00e9j\u00e0 v\u00e9cu de la Chine.<br \/>\nIl s\u2019agissait de traiter ce mat\u00e9riau qu\u2019est la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de la ville dans toute sa complexit\u00e9, sans pourtant le moindre souci d\u2019exhaustivit\u00e9, mais avec des dispositifs de saisie des apparences formellement d\u00e9finis. Il s\u2019agissait moins de d\u00e9crire que de simplement accumuler des images. Faire du vrai documentaire, mais d\u2019abord donner \u00e0 voir l\u2019exp\u00e9rience du contact avec le r\u00e9el : images \u00e9labor\u00e9es, not\u00e9es, ou simplement cueillies, r\u00e9cits de trajets, inventaires, collections, personnages crois\u00e9s, vestiges ou installations \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8res.<br \/>\nLe tour de P\u00e9kin, au rythme de la marche, selon le trajet \u00ab carr\u00e9 dress\u00e9 \u00bb qui relie les 4 temples situ\u00e9s aux 4 points cardinaux de la vieille ville, Autel de la Terre, Autel du Soleil, Autel du Ciel, Autel de la Lune.<br \/>\nUne marche de 12 heures tr\u00e8s exactement, le 19 septembre 1985, de 10h \u00e0 12h 30 \u00ab de la Terre au Soleil \u00bb, et de 15h \u00e0 17h 30, \u00ab du Soleil au Ciel \u00bb, le 21 septembre de 9h \u00e0 12h 30, \u00ab du Ciel \u00e0 la Lune \u00bb, le 23 septembre (jour de l\u2019\u00e9quinoxe d\u2019automne vou\u00e9 aux sacrifices \u00e0 la Lune), de 12h 30 \u00e0 16h, \u00ab de la Lune \u00e0 la Terre \u00bb.<br \/>\nUn premier appareil prenait syst\u00e9matiquement une photographie par minute, toujours droit devant soi, dans l\u2019axe du d\u00e9placement. Un deuxi\u00e8me appareil notait simultan\u00e9ment ce qui, dans ce d\u00e9placement, accrochait notre regard, le pittoresque, \u00e0 droite ou \u00e0 gauche. Les deux appareils inscrivaient date, heure, minute, dans la photographie m\u00eame : preuve d\u2019exactitude et principe de classement synchrone.<br \/>\nDonc, une collection de 1000 images : 720 photos (720 minutes du trajet), plus 280 photos (les \u00e0-c\u00f4t\u00e9s pittoresques).<br \/>\nEnregistr\u00e9es dans le vid\u00e9odisque, les images sont restitu\u00e9es sous le pilotage d\u2019un ordinateur. Quatre boutons situ\u00e9s sur un plan permettent de choisir pour point de d\u00e9part l\u2019un des quatre temples, les images du trajet d\u00e9filent alors sur l\u2019\u00e9cran au rythme de la seconde (le tour de P\u00e9kin en 12 minutes). Mais, \u00e0 chaque instant, on peut voir une autre image cach\u00e9e , celle de l\u2019\u00e0-c\u00f4t\u00e9\u00a0 de l\u2019endroit o\u00f9 l\u2019on se trouve. On l\u2019obtient en pressant un bouton qui ressemble au d\u00e9clencheur d\u2019un appareil photo.<br \/>\nLe trajet des quatre temples sur vid\u00e9odisque est sous forme d\u2019une installation associant une table chinoise o\u00f9 sont les commandes et d\u2019un \u00e9cran vid\u00e9o o\u00f9 apparaissent les images.<br \/>\nEn contrepoint, sont expos\u00e9es des photos carr\u00e9es en couleurs et en noir et blanc, prises sur des trajets qui eux rayonnent \u00e0 partir du centre de P\u00e9kin (L\u2019\u00e9cole des Beaux-Arts), au cours de cinq s\u00e9jours, de 1983 \u00e0 1987. Ces images carr\u00e9es pr\u00e9sentent des lieux simplement rencontr\u00e9s mais longuement regard\u00e9s, vestiges\u00a0 anciens ou modernes,\u00a0 r\u00e9miniscences des plus vieilles photographies connues de la ville.<br \/>\nLe vid\u00e9odisque est la version int\u00e9grale et interactive d\u2019une installation multim\u00e9dia pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au Th\u00e9\u00e2tre National de Chaillot, en marge de Spectacles dans une maison de th\u00e9 (Festival d\u2019Automne \u00e0 Paris, 1986). Cependant, si l\u2019horizon est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement m\u00e9connaissable, si l\u2019ambiance des rues est \u00abmodernis\u00e9e\u00bb, on se retrouve parfois devant des d\u00e9tails inchang\u00e9s, dans les structures d\u2019un \u00abtexte\u00bb urbain qui se donne \u00e0 relire avec un sentiment de familiarit\u00e9.<br \/>\nAvoir con\u00e7u cette investigation \u00abpour m\u00e9moire\u00bb, avec le projet affirm\u00e9 d\u2019avoir \u00e0 l\u2019actualiser de nouveau plus tard, sans effet nostalgique mais dans une volont\u00e9 d\u2019inscription d\u2019un processus de saisie, n\u2019est pas pour rien dans l\u2019impression procur\u00e9e par la visite de septembre 2001.<br \/>\nCar il s\u2019agit bien d\u2019un projet explicitement inscrit dans un temps relativement long. La notion de <em>work in progress<\/em> est ici sans doute la plus adapt\u00e9e.<br \/>\nLes 1000 images du vid\u00e9odisque de 1986 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 num\u00e9ris\u00e9es et mont\u00e9es dans un programme sur CD-ROM.<br \/>\nCe CD-ROM \u00e9tant plac\u00e9 sur un petit ordinateur portable, le retour sur les lieux a consist\u00e9 en un r\u00e9-affichage des images datant de 16 ans.<br \/>\nL\u2019ordinateur disposant d\u2019une cam\u00e9ra int\u00e9gr\u00e9e, j\u2019ai saisi les observateurs, sollicit\u00e9s ou rencontr\u00e9s fortuitement sur les lieux-m\u00eames, avec bien s\u00fbr cet argument : 16 ans plus t\u00f4t.<br \/>\nLes courtes s\u00e9quences vid\u00e9o sonores ainsi enregistr\u00e9es, mais aussi des photographies prises sans protocole autre que la r\u00e9miniscence et le sentiment de preuve de la pr\u00e9sence, constituent une nouvelles couche de P\u00e9kin, pour m\u00e9moire, sans en \u00e9puiser le projet qui reste ouvert \u00e0 de nouveaux \u00abmonuments\u00bb \u2014 au sens de ce qui entretient la m\u00e9moire\u00a0\u2014 \u00e0 recueillir et \u00e0 assembler.<br \/>\nIl reste aussi \u00e0 trouver de nouveaux usages \u00e0 cette
