Dans un premier temps, pour se situer dans l&rsquo;\u00ab Avant-garde \u00bb, Rancillac travaille une peinture abstraite. Mais, avec d&rsquo;autres, dans les ann\u00e9es soixante, il s&rsquo;engage dans une figuration qui sera nomm\u00e9e \u00ab Mythologies quotidienne \u00bb, puis \u00ab Figuration narrative \u00bb. Cette peinture monumentale, est une transition&nbsp;: les masses de couleur marqu\u00e9es par le pinceau,  librement abstraites, sont qualifi\u00e9es par le dessin de figures emprunt\u00e9es \u00e0 la bande dessin\u00e9e, \u00e0 la publicit\u00e9, aux images d&rsquo;actualit\u00e9.
