Ici, \u00e0 l&rsquo;angle de la rue de la Fortune, on lit la plaque \u00ab Rue Pierre S\u00e9mard, secr\u00e9taire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la f\u00e9d\u00e9ration des cheminots, fusill\u00e9 par les Allemands, 1887-1942 \u00bb. Il y a dans cette rue le Tennis club Cheminots arl\u00e9siens, le Tennis Mistral SNCF. La ville d&rsquo;Arles est marqu\u00e9e par le nombre des cheminots qui y ont v\u00e9cu et par leur engagement syndical et politique. On raconte \u00e0 ce propos comment, en 1842, Alphonse de Lamartine d\u00e9fend \u00e0 l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e Nationale le passage par Arles de la ligne de chemin de fer Paris-Lyon-Marseille et comment Arles fut choisie pour la construction d&rsquo;ateliers de fabrication et r\u00e9paration des locomotives et des wagons, d&rsquo;un d\u00e9p\u00f4t de machines. Leur emplacement fut en grande partie les terrains de la n\u00e9cropole antique des Alyscamps. Apr\u00e8s la fermeture des ateliers, en 1983, la m\u00e9c\u00e8ne Maja Hoffmann lance, en 2013, le projet LUMA pour en occuper le parc.
