At the core of this space-exploring machine is a RPT (rotate, pan, tilt) robotic head capable of moving a video camera through an unlimited orbital range of all three axes. A pair of opposite-facing infrared transmitters are in position to calibrate and synchronize the motion control motor drives with a related visual representation of the abstracted space, stored and retrieved from laser disk.
