Mardi 19 juin 2012, 20h, Gaîté lyrique, Paris, 3e. Vingt ans après être allé chez eux à Santa Fe (février 1992) et après avoir exposé leur installation Théâtre des automates hybrides dans Artifices 2 à Saint-Denis (novembre 1992) — de grands moments —, je suis venu revoir Steina (musicienne classique islandaise) et Woody Vasulka (ingénieur et cinéaste tchèque), les inventeurs de l’art électronique. Mais il a fallu entendre d’abord la propagande pour la série des festivals français « du domaine », sectarisme et mièvrerie, contre-vérités historiques : à fuir.
Woody Vasulka, The Theater of Hybrid Automata (Artifices 2, Saint-Denis, 1992) consists of and operates in two dialectically engaged spaces: the actual and the virtual. At the core of this space-exploring machine is a RPT (rotate, pan, tilt) robotic head capable of moving a video camera through an unlimited orbital range of all three axes. A pair of opposite-facing infrared transmitters are in position to calibrate and synchronize the motion control motor drives with a related visual representation of the abstracted space, stored and retrieved from laser disk.
